Window Views #21

Welcome again to Window Views. My windows today are unusual. What you're looking at are shots of the Johnston Family Mausoleum in Old Calvary Cemetery, Queens, N.Y.

You can find out all about the Johnston Family Mausoluem by clicking on the link above.

Do you see the blimp in the sky? Just to the left of the statue on top of the mausoleum.

So sign Mr. Linky and leave a comment. And don't forget to visit your fellow Window Viewers. Everyone appreciates visits and comments...

I guess the Johnstons were a big deal in Queens, huh? That first shot looks like one of the header shots on Sepia Scenes... same statue?

Nice collection. Even if the blank eyes on old statuary does creep me out a little. The story I heard goes that back in the day the Romans/Greeks et. al. painted their sculptures, so they didn't bother carving the features into the eyes. Centuries later when all the paint had worn off, everybody just took up the style thinking that's how it worked. Can't confirm or deny really, I wasn't there. But that's how I heard it. Sort of like if you trace it back through enough degrees of separation you can see how the chariots of the Roman Legions influenced the design of the Space Shuttle.

They must have been quite a family. I've never seen the appeal of immortalizing myself with a mausoleum, but perhaps that's just my Jewish upbringing talking. This one is certainly impressive though.

Those are some great old windows! I must admit, I'd rather think of being in open field with trees, flowers and sky - but I would nt see it either. I also like your Mark Twain window quote.

I find old cemeteries fascinating. What a memorial this family has created for themselves and all their descendants.

Interesting to see windows in a mausoleum.

The "grave" could be a little church ! The family must have been very rich to spend their money for such a mausoleum (I just wrote mouse...) We have lots of these family graves here too. Today more and more people want to be incinerated.

A Mausoleum, I don't believe I've ever seen one, never mind one so elaborate.

Fascinating shots ... not the kind of thing you see on the West Coast. I've missed a few weeks got my act together this morning and posted at Sacred Ruminations ;--)
Hugs and blessings,

Oh, cool! Impressive capture of the grand mausoleum. Interestingly enough, I think it's both grand and creepy; but I suppose the impression of creepiness is really coming from my thoughts on Dracula. :D I enjoyed viewing your pictures.
